This is a story about Skowhegan Birth Photography. On January the 15th, in the evening, I was called to attend and document the birth of Barrett. I was also given the honor to document their maternity session as well! When I arrived, Tiffany said “Wow you got here fast!” She hadn’t even realized an hour had passed since she contacted me. She told me she was hopeful I wouldn’t get bored because she didn’t feel that her labor was serious enough yet. Tiffany had planned to labor at home for as long as she could and then head to the hospital just a few minutes away. As a labor and delivery nurse herself, she knew she wanted to be in the comfort of her own home for most of her labor. Things picked up rather quickly after I arrived and I did not find myself bored, not one bit.
Hunter, Tiffany’s husband, was one of the most supportive partners I had ever witnessed. He held her through the contractions, empowered her abilities, and never left her side. Tiffany’s mom was also near by to help if needed. After several hours at home, things started to get very intense and contractions were close to a minute apart, so Tiffany started to contemplate when would be the right time to head to the hospital. Tiffany began saying, “What did we get ourselves into”. I knew that was one of those sayings similar to the “I don’t want to do this anymore”. That told me she was starting to transition towards delivery. I decided to add in my thoughts as they discussed a time to go, and I agreed that it was a good time to go. Hunter gathered things and prepped the vehicle for the ride. He came back in and helped Tiffany dress her feet. He brought out sneakers and she shook her head and I knew that meant she was not in a space to be patient enough for that so I quickly passed her slip on boots to her. We headed to the hospital and rushed up to the delivery floor. Tiffany was one of the most excited people in labor that I had ever witnessed. Between contractions she would squeal out in excitement that she was going to meet her son soon. She was also excited to be surrounded by her co-workers in the labor and delivery unit just as she had hoped. After about 20 minutes, Tiffany pushed only a couple of times and he was here. She couldn’t believe it, he was on her chest breathing, crying and looking up at his mommy. Tiffany was in disbelief, she had delivered her son. He was perfect, healthy, and so beautiful. Tiffany began to cry, she was so emotional that her dreams of having her own baby had come true. Hunter was in just as much disbelief as well. Everyone was so overjoyed in the room for the new family and their beautiful new baby boy. They kept his name a secret until he arrived as well. They had his name made into a sign to go above his crib but kept a blanket over it so conceal his name until birth. A few moments after birth, Tiffany looked at her mom and said his name is Barrett. They had the name picked out for a while, even before Christmas because Tiffany got his name engraved in a wallet for Hunter as a gift.
Tiffany and Hunter got to have lots of skin to skin right after birth. They spent a day recovering in the hospital and soon they were bringing their little baby boy home. I visited them a day later for a fresh 48 session and got to see how beautiful their new little family was.
