Mayo Regional Hospital Birth Photography
This is a birth I photographed at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. I was originally contacted 2 days before this birth, to photograph their delivery at Holly No 7 Birth Center in Bangor, Maine. It soon became clear that they would need to be induced at the hospital due to preeclampsia, which is high blood pressure in pregnancy and protein in the urine. This sometimes happens and it is needed to be induced when nearing the end of pregnancy for the safety of the parent and baby. I did not expect to see this family so soon after being hired, but I was pleasantly surprised.
All births that I attend are very different from each other. I love when I can share births with everyone so they too can see how different every birth story is. I have spent 30+ hours with people in labor, and I’ve also shown up as they are pushing, so it’s always hard to gauge when to show up. With this birth in particular, I knew there would be an induction, which started at 11 PM. I had them keep me updated throughout the night but chose to stay home as long as possible because I knew inductions took a long time.
When morning came, I was alerted that it was time to come to the hospital, and I came right away. As soon as I entered the building, the front desk could not reach the nurse’s station and recommended I sit and wait. Knowing how advanced in labor this person was, I called their support person right up and asked what room they were in and headed right up. I was quickly welcomed into the labor unit by the doctor who greeted me and said, “You must be the birth photographer! Come in quick!”
As I walked into the birthing room, they were already pushing! I was so glad I made it JUST in time to welcome their beautiful child into the world!
Their little baby was born quickly and perfectly! They even had a bonus thumb! This is called Polydactlyl!
